Is Coronavirus Affecting NBA 2K20?
2020-03-18 14:26

Yes, the coronavirus is affecting NBA 2K20. Let's find out how. Just a few days ago, the current NBA season has been canceled with no resume date in sight. This happened just before the game between Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder. The players, the audience, and everyone else was waiting for the game to begin. The match didn't take place as the players were told to go back to their lockers.

Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus. He was not on that evening's lineup as he was received medical care but he had been in contact with the other players. The Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder players who were on the court that day are now in quarantine. Players from the teams that had games against Utah Jazz in the last week and a half are in self-quarantine.

As a prevention method, the NBA season is put on hold. NBA 2K20 is a realistic simulation that is based on what is happening in the real NBA. The thing is that nothing is happening right now and that is affecting the game.

MyLeague is the mode that is affected by the suspension of the NBA season. This mode has an option called Start Today. This feature is built on current NBA events. Start Today takes into consideration current happenings and standings. It gives players the chance to start a career from this point onward. What is happening next in the game is determined by the real NBA events. The game is using the real schedule and it is pulling data from real games to shape up the player's experience.

As we said before, there is no data to built on Start Today right now. What is happening if you try to access this feature? The game will try for a while to simulate some results but eventually, it will crash. The schedule for the NBA season is still available so that's not the missing data. It's possible that the game is trying to obtain info from the last 24 hours. As no games have been played, there is no data and that's what might make the game crash.

There's no real reason though to start pointing fingers as this is not a scenario that could have been foreseen by the developers. No one is considering implementing fail-safe mechanics in their game in case of a pandemic outbreak. Just take note and don't access that feature unless you want to crash your game.
